Cassian's POV
I silently ate my eggs as I tuned into my parents' conversation again.
I looked up at my father in his crisp suit and neatly combed hair.
"Did you hear about the new legislation they're pushing?" He asked my mother. "If it passes, we'll need to get ready for a response."
My mother's gaze lifted as she grabbed her coffee cup. "Don't worry about it, honey. Selene will take care of it."
I stood up from my seat, but my father quickly stopped me.
"Where do you think you're going, Cassian?" He snapped.
"I'll be late for school," I glared at him. "It's the first day back."
My father leaned back in his chair. "You'll have plenty of time for school. Sit. Down."
I clenched my fists, but reluctantly sank back into my seat.
He threw two envelopes in front of me. "Princeton and Columbia accepted you."
The look on his face was telling me that he wasn't proud.
"So what's the problem?" I asked.
"Why the hell haven't I received any from Harvard or Yale as yet?" He glared.
I clenched my jaw, the weight of his disappointment settling in the room.
"I got into two Ivy League schools,"I muttered. "That's more than most people can say."
"Most people aren't my son!" He angrily shouted.
There it was again.
A reminder that I had to be the best of the best in order to be Edward Hawthorne's son.
No exceptions.
"Don't worry, I'll make a few calls to see what's taking so long," my mother tried to help.
I silently scoffed before attempting to stand up again, but he slammed his hand on the table.
"Don't leave from this table unless you're told to do so!" He angrily shouted.
He then threw a card in front of me.
"Name it," he glared at me.
I silently stared at the grey card.
"Cassian, this isn't just about you," my father glared. "It's about how people perceive you...us."
"Name it!" He angrily shouted.
"Red," I guessed.
I soon felt a hard slap across my face. "Wrong! What the hell have you been practicing!?"
I held my cheek before glaring at him.
"It's green," he angrily said before slamming another card in front of me. "Again."
