Cassian's POV
"I can't believe those fools are being praised for the mining expansions," my father grumbled as he used his steak knife to cut his sirloin.
"Exactly," my mom angrily agreed. "It was your idea!"
I silently sipped on my lemonade as my dad glanced at Selene.
"Selene, thanks for staying for dinner," he told her. "After you're finished eating, you can have an early night."
My mom nodded. "Yes, you've been working nonstop, dear."
"I'm going to make a few phone calls tomorrow," my dad told her. "See if you can move up the ranks."
She nodded. "Thank you, sir. I'm grateful."
I rolled my eyes before slamming my glass down.
My parents ignored, but Selene glanced at me.
"Are you okay?" She whispered. "You've been quiet the whole night."
"I'm fine," I muttered.
"You don't seem fine," she said and I turned to her.
"What can you do about it, huh?" I snapped at her.
"Cassian!" My mother angrily shouted at me.
"Raven lost her tennis match today!" I told them. "I should be comforting her right now."
"It's a silly match and she's not your obligation," my dad rolled his eyes. "Your little friend won't die if you don't rub her back."
"It's been a month for crying out loud," I told him. "Can't I at least get a new phone?"
"For what?" He asked. "So you can order a plane ticket this time and never come back!?"
I sighed. "I'm just asking for a phone."
My sentence went right over his head.
"Last month, you took the car and drove off to who knows where for an entire day and night," he argued.
"Your friend will be okay, Cassian," my mom said.
"She has no one," I told them. "Her brother doesn't give a shit about her."
"Language," my mother glared.
Selene cleared her throat as she stood up.
My mom sighed. "Selene, I'm so sorry you had to hear this. You know how ignorant teenagers can get."
She shook her head. "No, it's fine. Families fight all the time, but I don't think I should be here to hear it."
My father nodded. "Bring the FIMA documents when you're heading to office tomorrow."
"Yes, sir," she nodded before rushing out.
When the front door closed, my father slammed his wine glass on the table before walking around to me.
