Raven's POV

The car ride home was suffocatingly quiet, except for the faint hum of the engine.

Ryan hadn't said a word since we dropped off my grandfather at the airport.

In fact, he hasn't said a word to me since yesterday.

I looked down at my lap as he stopped in front of the Hawthorne's residence.

I cleared my throat before moving to open the door.

"Well, thanks for the-"

"Raven," he stopped me as his hands gripped the wheel tighter.

I paused, my hand lowering over the door handle. "What?"

He exhaled heavily before finally looking at me for the first time in over a day.

"Really?" He asked. "That's how I find out you have a boyfriend?"

I scoffed.

"Oh please, that's nothing compared to the secret you've kept," I argued.

He clenched his jaw before facing in front of him again.

A moment of silence passed between us before I opened the door.

"I preferred knowing you as my brother," I told him. "At least I wouldn't expect much of you."

I had hoped that he would say something...anything, but he remained silent.

Just like he does in every fight.

I clenched my fists before rushing out, slamming the car door behind me.

When I entered inside, there was complete silence and darkness.

"Cassian?" I called out as I turned on a few of the lights.

I checked the time on my phone and saw that it was already eleven thirty.

He must have fallen asleep already.

He was studying in the library all day.

I sighed, hoping that I would have gotten to spend some time with him after whatever that was with Ryan.

Ryan expects me to tell him every detail about my life, but he never does it in return.

I sighed out of frustration again as I stormed up the stairs.

When I reached my room, I angrily pushed the door open, still muttering under my breath about Ryan.

After taking one step in, I immediately stopped in my tracks.

Cassian was in the corner of the room, striking a match to light the last of a dozen candles scattered around.

The warm flicker of the flames cast golden light over the space.
