The next morning Natsu divulged the reason for her return.
Evan and Kei were busy making toast and knowing that they were about to have the worst day possibly ever, they were resolutely avoiding both practice and their phones,
Natsu thundered out of what Evan assumed was her room at around seven looking ridiculous and Evan noted, very much like Kei again. The family resemblance only seemed to get stronger with every day.
She clutched an empty coffee cup and her open laptop, black hoodie on with the strings tied tight around her face, exactly the way Kei did it. She set the laptop on the bench and skirted around them to make another coffee.
Evan could see some sort of mind bending coding simulation running on her computer screen. He craned his neck to see if he could decipher it. Idly he wondered how long she'd been up working on it.
Then, waiting for the coffee to brew, the girl sat herself on the bench and finally seemed to realise they were there.
"Oh hey," she said idly, dragging her laptop back onto her lap.
Kei muttered something with his mouth full of toast.
Then, as if remembering something, she looked up, "Oh, mom thinks you're losing it by the way."
There was a long moment of silence.
Kei blinked, swallowing his mouthful, "Huh?"
Natsu was typing something, "Sorry, forgot to mention it last night, it's why i'm here, to apparently convince you to go to that therapist."
"Again?" Was all Kei said, setting his toast down. "Seriously? Which one is it this time? The one for dyslexia?"
Which one? As in, there were multiple therapists? Suddenly Evan got the impression that Kei's mother was a bit worse than he let on.
"Yeah." Natsu sighed, "Obviously I won't, I came because I miss you and I have a long weekend, but you need to come up with something to get her to back off."
Kei looked demoralised at that, "I've tried everything, seriously—"
Natsu finally shut her laptop, looking up at him, "Would it really be so bad?"
Kei frowned, "You want me to go?"
"No, I think she's being stupid, but you know she's back on monday, and she told me she plans on staying for a while," Natsu shrugged, "I'm worried okay, I don't want you to make this harder on yourself than it needs to be."
"She's staying?" Kei said dully.
"S'what she said."
"Fuck," Kei muttered.
"I'm sorry," Natsu sighed, "I know you have a lot going on what with the whole coming out thing, you just need to prepare yourself okay?"
"Fine," Kei mumbled.
Evan could see the strength drain from him completely, and he just wanted to hug the other boy and never set foot out of the nice little bubble they'd made.
The bubble had officially begun to pop.
Kei sighed into his toast, taking a sad bite.
Then, in the spirit of not avoiding the inevitable, Evan trudged back into Kei's bedroom and fished his phone out from under the beanbag, sitting on the floor as he did.
